Welcome to Ruby Victoria Letterpress & printmaking

Here you will find photos of all my original hand carved linocut prints and letterpress printing.
A commercial printer by trade a printmaker by choice.
I specialize in original handcarved lino block prints with a bit of letterpress thrown in for good measure.
All printed on antique printing machines with that unmistakable bite into the paper that you can only get with letterpress printing

The work that I do is not created on a computer everything is hand drawn then hand carved out of lino then printed one impression at a time on my tabletop letterpress machine

I do not use polymer which limits me somewhat in regards to type but I love to use traditional methods in my printing that involve handset type and hand carved designs and I think this is what make my work totally Original and Unique to what other people are doing right now and it also meaning everything I make is an original work of art
I love what I do and love to share it with others that are interested

I am thrilled to be apart of The Makers Market at the Design Center in Launceston this year it is on the 12th of February from 10am-4pm .
There have been only a handful of people chosen to take part in this market, these are designers and makers that are what the Design Center consider to be the best in the state at .what they do and I am very humbled to be part of this group of very talented people.

The market will be held in the court yard at the Design Centre and it is in conjunction with Festivale in city park-which is a big city food and wine festival that happens every year and is a huge day on the the locals social calender in Tasmania.

The second market is on the 13th at the Market in the Masonic hall in Sandy bay road Hobart.

I have been attending this market for a while now and it is always alot of fun and lots of wonderful designers and customers so if you are in Hobart come along and say hi :)

I will have some new product for these markets which will be nice, I will be selling my one of a kind linocut brooches pictured here and some new designs that I have been printing on greeting cards and Moleskin notebooks
I hope you like them :)

saturday at Salamanca

ruby with her beautiful face paint

We spent a lovely day at Salamanca market yesterday Allan and ruby stayed the whole day with me which was a nice change as I am usually there by myself, but due to the position of my stall it meant that Ruby had heaps of space to run around and play with other kids through out the day and having Allan there mean I was able to go off and have a look around the rest of the market which never happens normally.

Ruby was rather taken with this guy dressed up as pirate and was pretending to be a statue
personally i find this sort of thing creepy

We had a great day the sun was shining, there were lots of friendly people around and having my family there with me just made it complete :)

Cygnet folk festival

Last night we had the pleasure of going to see the Tasmanian Heritage fiddlers ensemble at the Cygnet folk festival. The group is headed up by our friends Steve and Marjorie Gadd of Franklin and the group meets every week to hone their skills.

The Tasmanian Heritage Fiddle Ensemble are dedicated to reviving traditional Tasmanian country Dance music and for performing original contemporary Tasmanian folk music.
The brief of this group is to revive a hoard of great lost and over-looked music, to teach Tasmanian musicians to love and revere their own local traditions and to contribute creatively to expanding these traditions.
Last nights concert although way too short was fantastic, they played to a full house and had everyone dancing in their seat and lots of kids up the front.
There is just something about this music that I love it is so contagious, you would have to be a corpse not to feel any joy or have it make your foot tap to the beat from hearing it and I think after last night they might just have converted Allan the total die hard classical listener but when we left he actually admitted to maybe wanting to join this group.

Here is some photos of this fantastic group in action

If you get a chance make sure you catch these guy you will not regret it.

A new product from out of nowhere

I just love it when an idea just eventuate out of nowhere I have been desparing over throwing away prints that have not quite worked out yet are still good enough to be used for something else but until now I didn't know what ! this is what I finally came up with.

I spent the best part of yesterday arvo playing around with the card that the brooches are attached to and I think they have turned out pretty well they are printed on post consumer recycled card with handset letterpress type, some of the letters hasve printed a little bit blurry but I kind of like the imperfections, give it little bit of extra character .

These photos are of just a few of the brooches that I have made they are all different so you will be purchasing a definite one of a kind wearable art brooch.
I will have these for sale at the upcoming markets and at a new store in Salamanca place call Spacebar gallery

I hope you all like them as much as i do !

Showing support for Flood effected Queenslanders

We have been sitting here watching the devastation unfolding throughout Queensland due to torrential rain and rising water on the TV over the last couple of day in complete disbelief. and I guess it is easy for us that are not in the way of the floods to feel helpless to really do anything to help these poor souls and their families, but I just figure that if everyone just give a little bit it will equate to alot, this is why I decided to join many of my fellow artists and crafters through out Australia that are holding Auctions of their handy work such as art works, jewelery, books, the list goes on, to show support for the flood disaster relief effort

You can find my Auction on my facebook page **** here**** please bid generously
the People of Queensland really need your support

100% of the money generated from my auction will go directly toward the Flood appeal
thank you for your support

New, Pretty and Small

Over the holiday I had a little bit of time on my hands to think up a few new things on how to reuse the ever mount pile of printed paper I accumulate around the house as I loath to throw any of it out no matter how small a piece it is.
I think I have finally come up with a way to use some of my paper that has been printed but wasn't quiet printed well enough to sell as stand alone art works.

I am not sure if I will make them into magnets or bookmarks or even jewellery yet but I am very happy with how they look and they are totally original as they are made entirely of my own linocut prints instead of cutting out pages from golden books like I had first decided on doing , Glad I didnt !

So what do you all think?
What would you like to see them become as a finished product I would be really interested to hear some of your ideas
Take care Narelle x

home again home again

I never though I would be so happy to be home back in Tassie as you might already know we have just sent 2 weeks in Sydney with Allans Family for Christmas and even thought it wasn't overly hot it was hot enough to make the kids cranky and Allan and I counting down the days till we were back in a much cooler climate where if we get cold we can just rug up and it is never that hot it is causing craziness in the kids.
Ruby and mousie snuggled up in Nonas 30 year old crochet rug she gave me

To make our home coming all the more sweet we came home to a sweet little welcome home flower arrangement near our front door from out little neighbor and friend of rubies Alice. it just had me all the more happier to be home after a long two weeks of a place that neither Allan I feel comfortable or at home in, so it was really nice to know that we had been missed

Alices little welcome home to us at out front door

Alice and Ruby back to where they left off 2 weeks ago :)

The other great think was the mail that was waiting for me when I got home I was thrilled to get a card and a new car from my friends and fellow printmakers Joanne and Dennis, it is actually a letterpress print of one of dennis's printers blocks, I will have to find a little frame for it is it just divine.

I also got not one but two copy's if Isis's long awaited and much anticipated Tea zine in which I have my red teacup stack linocut featured and a little question and answer with me
there was even a little gift of a badge and a sample from Jolie de tea. You can purchase a copy of the zine from here www.etsy.com/shop/isis

My signed copy of Handmade living arrived as well I have decided to give a copy of the book away soon but I haven't worked out the details just yet I will keep you all posted on this

I hope you all have had a wonderful festive season and wish you all the best for the new year and I look forward to hearing form you all in the coming year
