Welcome to Ruby Victoria Letterpress & printmaking

Here you will find photos of all my original hand carved linocut prints and letterpress printing.
A commercial printer by trade a printmaker by choice.
I specialize in original handcarved lino block prints with a bit of letterpress thrown in for good measure.
All printed on antique printing machines with that unmistakable bite into the paper that you can only get with letterpress printing

The work that I do is not created on a computer everything is hand drawn then hand carved out of lino then printed one impression at a time on my tabletop letterpress machine

I do not use polymer which limits me somewhat in regards to type but I love to use traditional methods in my printing that involve handset type and hand carved designs and I think this is what make my work totally Original and Unique to what other people are doing right now and it also meaning everything I make is an original work of art
I love what I do and love to share it with others that are interested

East side Makers Market

The inagural Eatside Makers Market was on yesterday and we had a fantastic day meeting all our new customers on the otherside of the Derwent and all the new and regular market crowd .
The venue was perfct so big and light and stalls were spaced out so we all had plenty of room to move.
This time I was lucky enough to be placed next to the Arkmetal guys.Pig & his mate brad together make the most mind blowing creations out of found metal objects and put them together using welders and drills and all matter of wonderfully dangerous power tools.
I particularily like the candle arboura made out of a huge Valiant manifold and Pigs very beautiful little mirrors and to top it off these guy are funny as ! do yourself a favour and have a look at their blog here ,very inspiring stuff.

Anyway I had a great day but I must say I was very happy to get home and just zonk after a very busy and tiring weekend of markets

Mathildas market a huge sucess !

Ruby Victoria Letterpress & Printmaking (aka Me)

The very talented Isis with her upcycled journals

The most beautiful dresses I have ever seen

Little snorings stall

Mathildas market was here today and what a lovely day it was too
There has been a buzz around Hobart for months about Mathildas coming to Tasmania and from what I could see customers were not disappointed.
There was a steady flow of parents & grandparent with their little ones tagging along all day so the times flew by and before we knew it it was all over and time to pack up and go home .
I would like to thank the Mathildas market organisers for giving Hobart a chance to shine and be part of their very exciting national market place for kids and their parents and I look forward to Mathilda's return later in the year

beautiful things

After printing my babushka dolls I have decided it is time to do something different something a little different, something a little loftier and stunning colour wise.
I have always loved peacocks and I was thinking yesterday that a peacock would be an idea subject for my next screen printing project so yesterday in between printing, packing and amusing Ruby Galooby I did this very quick drawing to work from when I wasn't so busy.
I always find it amusing that most of my best design ideas seem to pop up when I am incredible busy and don't have time to think to much about them, in hindsight this is probably a good thing as it make me have to quickly draw thinks out so that I don't forget them and I end up with very spontaneous scrawly drawings that I actually really like .
I would really like to keep the spontaneity of the original drawing in this print so I am going to have to have a bit of a play with how I make the final screen that will pull all the other colours together so it is going to be interesting to see how it all turns out

I would love some feedback on this new project if anyone would like to share

Handmade Hobart yesterday

I think everyone had a positive day at the market yesterday some familiar faces and new one saying hello
It looked like rain at the beginning of the day but luckily the rain blew over and just left us with a few big gusts of wind that almost created a Dorothy moment for me a couple of time with the new gazebo so I quickly tied it all down nice and secure.I have to admit I really liked having the stalls outside this time around, lots of fresh air and natural sunlight and with all the gazebos that people bought along it actually looked fantastic we even had room for more people to have stalls as we set up in the much larger space at the St Marys Basketball courts.

I hope the ladies at the handmade market will consider taking the stalls outside on a more regular basis in the warmer months it just give the whole thing a much nicer feel I think, but this is just my opinion, I seemed to feel less tired at the end of the day yesterday than when I have done all the other indoor markets ,.anyway I had a lovely day sitting in my new gazebo out of the wind carving my new linos for Mathildas this coming weekend and chatting to people.
This little guy in the photo was creating alot of interest yesterday as I was carving him out, so I thought I'd add a photo here of the finished print Ithink I will print him in red also, what do you all think ?

recipe cards have been given a face lift

From this

To this.....

I decided to give my recipe cards a little bit of a face lift
first I changed the type to something a little less heavy and lighter in colour made the edges of the cards a bit more elegant and changed the plain white cotton string to a much nicer blue & white candy strip cotton twine then package in a cellophane bag to protect them
I think with just these few little tweeks to their appearance and these look so much more inviting
what do you all think ?
If you would like to purchase a pack they are available in my Madeit store here

Pretty little envelopes & business cards

This week has been pretty much taken up with getting rid of the last remaning bit of a very yucky flu, a trip to launceston, filling wholesale orders, returning lots of emails from people I dont know printing business cards ( see photo) and with getting ready for upcoming market.
I have 4 market in the next 3 weeks and I guess it doesnt sound all that scary but I as usual I am doing cartwheels in my mind like that song on the muppets, sang by a funny little blue monster with spining legs, anyway Mathildas has turned out to be the biggest worry as I am not really known for my children orientated wares and I have felt obligate to come up with some new stuff to fill that gap enter my new upcycled envelopes that I have been making out of little golden books I have been buying from the Vinnies stores and I think I have kind of fallen in love with themall over again especially the ones that were printing in the 1960s, the Illustrations are just so beautiful and the paper they are printed on is heavier weight than is used now, even the binding is stronger and better quality I guess it is just a sign of the times .

My beautiful Babies

These are my two beautiful babies Christopher & Ruby most of you that visit here would have seen Ruby on my blog but you might have missed my son Christoper in past posts.
These photos were taken today at City Park in Launceston, we did a quick trip to launceston to drop some work off at The Mill Providore & Gallery and then went to the Park for some Lunch and to let the kids have a run around and a ride on the train.

My printmaking collection, No.2 Mariann Johansen-Ellis

Mariann Johansen-Ellis , this amazing lady is the 2nd in my list of artists /printmakers that I adore and am seriously proud to say I have one of her gorgeous prints in my collection.
She lives between Singapore and Spain & my teacup prints will be jetting off to live in Marianns kitchen in Spain ,how nice for them.

A couple of weeks ago I recieved a convo from marianne on Etsy asking if I would be interested in doing a swap with her one of my prints for one of her, I jumped at this right away I have been a fan of Marianne work for sometime and was thrilled that she like my work as much as I liked her.

Mariann creates some of the most beautiful etching and other prints on etsy
Wonderous, Whimsical, Fun, Interesting and just plain Beautiful .

I print that I chose was The daisy tree, this print really spoke to me on a personal level and i wanted it as a reminder of how different my life has become in a more positive way.

I am sure you will love Marianns work as much as I do

The Mill Providore Gallery reopening in Launceston

I have had some wonderful things happen to me this year already but I would never have thought in a million years that I would receive an email asking if I would like to be one of the Artist to show at the reopening exhibition at the Mill Providore Gallery, formerly Ritchies mill gallery.

Way back when I was still studying Art I would take trips to Launceston alot to visit all the Galleries and artist co ops around Launceston and Ritchies was one of my favourites,
I remember thinking to myself way back then, one day I want to have work here but I thought it would never be, looks like I was wrong !

This gallery has hung work by some of my favourite Tasmanian & Australian artists, one that is still vivid in my mine it John Worseley he was doing an artist in residence stint at the Mill. it was wonderful meet & talk to him about his work it was very exciting to me to see him work.
So this is a real dream come true for me to have my work hung in a space where Kit Hiller, Ray Arnold & Tom Samek have been hung.

The exhibition will open at 3pm on Sunday the 28th of March and will run until the 6th of May

personalised note card packs

I am really happy with how these turned out, a very simple idea and design but it works perfectly. The lead type just love the recycled card and leaves a lovely impression that you can only achieve with letterpress printing

The note cards in the photos were printed for a local lady as a gift for friends but would be equally good as a thank you gift at weddings and other special events.
